Bus Decision Guide

Most buyers narrow it down with two questions: how many people need to ride, including the driver, and whether your drivers have a CDL. This guide answers both, points you to the right size or type, and explains what buying from a dealer gets you.

Which Bus Size Do You Need?

Carpenter Bus Sales bus sizes compared by seating, CDL requirement, and starting price
Size Seats, including driver CDL needed? New from Used from
Small Up to 15 No* About $105,000 Under $40,000
Mid Size 16 to 30 Yes About $125,000 About $80,000
Large 31 to 45 Yes About $170,000 About $90,000

The number that matters most is 15. A bus built for 15 or fewer people, including the driver, can be driven on a regular license under federal law. At 16 and up, the driver needs a CDL with a passenger endorsement. If your drivers are volunteers or staff without a CDL, that one number often decides the size for you.

Common Questions About Buying a Bus

Where is Carpenter Bus Sales located?
We have two locations: 132 Royal Oaks Blvd. in Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville, and 6400 Old Dallas Road in Elm Mott, Texas, just north of Waco. Call (800) 370-6180 to reach either one.
Do you deliver buses outside Tennessee and Texas?
Yes. We deliver to all 50 states, so you do not need to live near either location to buy a bus from us.
Which buses need a CDL?
Under federal law, a bus built to carry 16 or more people including the driver requires a CDL with a passenger endorsement. Our small buses seat 15 or fewer, so they can be driven on a regular license. Every mid size and large bus needs a CDL.* *Some states may have their own requirements that differ from the federal threshold. Confirm with your state's DMV before assuming.
How much does a bus cost?
New buses start around $105,000 for a 15 passenger, $125,000 for a mid size, and $170,000 for a large bus. Used buses start under $40,000. The final price depends on size, chassis, and features like a wheelchair lift.
Do you sell both new and used buses?
Yes. New buses are available in stock or built to order. Every used bus goes through our service department before it is listed, and older, higher mileage units under $40,000 are listed separately as Bargain Bus Deals.
What if I am not sure what size bus I need?
Start with two questions: how many people ride at once, including the driver, and whether your drivers have a CDL. Those two answers usually narrow it to one size. From there, a sales rep can walk you through what is in stock and what can be ordered.
