Choosing the wrong commercial bus can cost you time, money, and safety. Whether you're buying for a church, shuttle service, or assisted living community, avoiding these common mistakes helps you get the right vehicle for your needs—and keeps your passengers comfortable and secure.
If your organization doesn’t have a CDL driver—or doesn’t want to manage one—non-CDL is the better fit.
1. Buying the Wrong Size
It seems simple, but many first-time bus buyers miscalculate capacity.- Buying too small? You’ll end up making extra trips—or upgrading sooner than expected.
- Buying too big? You may pay more than necessary for fuel, maintenance, and insurance.
2. Overlooking CDL and Non-CDL Requirements
Before you buy, know who’s going to drive the bus.- A CDL bus carries 16+ passengers. It requires a Commercial Driver’s License.
- A non-CDL bus carries 15 or fewer and is often easier to staff and insure.

3. Ignoring Accessibility Needs
Many buyers forget to plan for wheelchair access, step height, or senior-friendly layouts.- Will you transport older adults or people with mobility challenges?
- Do you need a wheelchair lift or wider aisle space?
4. Skipping the Warranty or Vehicle History
Don’t buy blind—especially when buying used. Before committing:- Ask for a service and inspection history
- Confirm the mileage and title status
- Check the warranty or any remaining factory coverage
5. Choosing the Wrong Dealer
Your dealer matters more than you think.- Do they specialize in commercial and shuttle buses?
- Will they support you after the sale?
- Do they have real experts—not just salespeople?
