Buses and Vans to Be Inspected by U.S. DOT

Carpenter Bus Sales wants to let all of our current and future customers  know about impending safety inspections that will be performed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) over the course of the next two weeks. These inspections will take place in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia. The following post is an excerpt from the United States Department of Transportation Official Website and written by Anne Ferro:

Federal, state and local commercial vehicle inspectors across the country have begun an intensified safety crack-down to protect bus passengers and the motoring public by removing unsafe vehicles and drivers from our nation’s highways and roads. Over the course of the next two weeks–in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories–specially trained investigators will inspect motorcoaches, buses, and 9-to-15-passenger vans for overall vehicle maintenance and safety equipment condition.

Investigators will check brakes, tires, exhaust systems, and other mechanical components. They will also verify commercial driver qualifications and driver compliance with federal hours-of-service requirements.  Vehicles and drivers found to be violating critical safety regulations—and thereby needlessly endangering passengers and other motorists sharing the road with them–will be put out-of-service on the spot and not allowed to continue.

This aggressive, nationwide Passenger Carrier Strike Force complements FMCSA’s broader, ongoing commitment to ensuring that inter-city bus transportation continues to be one of the very safest modes of public transportation. And we are not just limiting our focus to vehicles and to drivers.  In just the past five months, FMCSA’s “Operation Quick Strike” has shut-down entire bus companies – 28 in total – that have willfully disregarded basic safety measures. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx captured the essence of our focus when he noted, “Buses are a convenient, inexpensive way to travel, and we are committed to keeping them safe.”

Strong enforcement efforts help to ensure safety.  But the traveling public has an important role to play as well.  Before you purchase your next inter-city bus ticket, “Look before you book!” by checking the company’s safety record through FMCSA’s easy to use SaferBus mobile app.  iPhone, iPad and Android phone users can download it for free at www.fmcsa.dot.gov/saferbus.  To report an unsafe an unsafe bus company, call 1-888-DOT- SAFT (1-888-368-7238).  You may also report safety violations through the SafeBus mobile app or by going online and visiting FMCSA’s consumer complaint website at: http://nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov/.
